Shedding Light on FDWs’ Inside Lives

As Covid-19 forced the postponement of Aidha’s annual Unspoken Life Photography Competition and Exhibition, in mid-May, Aidha launched Inside Life, a mini-photography contest for foreign domestic workers (FDWs) in Singapore. Inside Life was launched to get the participants’ creative juices flowing in light of the extension of the Circuit Breaker. It also served as a platform for aspiring photographers to try their hand at photography and hone their skills.

Overall Winner, Siami, shares her positive outlook on the pandemic,
“It’s hard in this COVID-19 situation. But it can’t beat us. Like the wheels of the bicycle, we need to keep our lives moving.”

The mini-photography contest comprised two categories: “Inside Life” and “Me, Myself and I”. For “Inside Life”, we encouraged FDWs to share more about their life indoors, to find the little joys, comforts and beauty in their surroundings that they would normally overlook. For “Me, Myself and I”, we invited FDWs to share with us a photograph of themselves that truly reflected their personality with selfies!

We received an overwhelming number of submissions, and our judges had a very difficult time deciding on the winning photographs out of more than 480 photos from over 140 individuals! Photographs submitted featured a diverse range of photography styles and photographers’ unique stories, thoughts, and passions – a testament to the fact that inspiration can be found anywhere, even at home. Beyond that, the photographs exhibited an insightful glimpse of the world in lockdown through the lenses of FDWs.

The contest also consisted of a voting component for the People’s Choice Award – the top six photos, handpicked by our judges, were featured on our Facebook page where the photographers rallied their friends and other FDWs to vote for their photographs. After a close fight, Michelle Alinsub’s entry for “Me, Myself and I”, emerged as the winner for the People’s Choice Award while Dazzle Madera Nierva’s entry for “Inside Life” emerged a close second.

Special thanks to our distinguished panel of judges, who took the time to look through hundreds of wonderful entries, to all the FDW photographers who submitted photographs, and to the many people who participated in voting for our People’s Choice winners. Last but not least, big congratulations to our winners!
