Aidha Photography Exhibition 2018

Discover hidden talents and take a unique perspective on the lives of foreign domestic workers (FDWs) in Singapore at the 3rd Annual Aidha Photography Exhibition from 24th to 25th November 2018.

As a way to celebrate foreign domestic workers as dreamers, artists and changemakers, Unspoken Life gives voice to the journeys that FDWs take when they arrive in Singapore. There are over 240,000 FDWs in Singapore but many remain unseen and invisible, defined solely by their duties and responsibilities. This exhibition delves beneath the labels to unfurl the many selves that FDWs keep hidden from Singapore society.

The featured photographs are all taken by FDWs as part of the Unspoken Life Photography Competition. Photographs will be available for sale and all proceeds will go towards the Aidha’s 2018 Gift of Education campaign.

From the breathtaking photographs and inspiring stories to lively interactive workshops facilitated by foreign domestic workers, the exhibition is filled with fun and cultural activities for everyone! Also, don’t miss out on the screening of ‘The Helper’, an award-winning documentary showcasing the sacrifices and the lives of migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong which will take place on Sunday, 25th November, at 11am and 4pm. Unspoken Life: Aidha Photography Exhibition 2017

Aidha organised the final event of the year, the Unspoken Life: Aidha Photography Competition & Exhibition 2017! We held an Opening Night event where we invited the media, representatives from Indonesia and Philippines embassy, corporate partners and Aidha supporters. The following days, on Saturday, 16th and Sunday 17th December, we opened the gallery to the public! We received positive responses from them as they were utterly impressed by the photography skills, creativity and of course, the emotional stories that came with the photographs. Not only that, we had several workshops that were run by the amazing partners and NGOs such as Sing Lit Station who organised the poetry workshop facilitated by local poet, Crispin Rodrigues, Aidha experienced mentors ran the ever-popular money management game and lastly, the photography workshop was organised by Aidha volunteer, Elvin Ling and Lensational, an NGO which empowers women through photography. Also, not forgetting, we had an amazing time with the live sketching idea courtesy of Unstitching Boundaries and our gallery partner, Intersections!

Thank you to all these amazing partners! Also, a BIG thank you to our event sponsors: Mr Ken Cambie, Ms Abela Samson Lourdes, Ms Chan Yvonna, Ms Chua Yi Wen and Ms Chung Li Li! #SheMeansBusiness Facebook Workshop

“When women succeed, we all win.” On the 29th of January 2018, Aidha along with over 60 FDWs (Aidha students and non-students) headed to Facebook’s Asia-Pacific office, for a presentation on using Facebook for business and a grand tour of the Facebook Asia Pacific office. It was quite an exciting day as Aidha partnered with #SheMeansBusiness for the first time (not the last time for sure!) and presented on Women in Business and how social media tools like Facebook and Instagram can be used for business growth. Clair Deevy and Diana Seodardi from the #shemeansbusiness Facebook team led the presentation and shared tips and tricks for excelling as a Woman in the business world and also pressed on the importance of privacy/security when using Facebook. They also highlighted to the attendees the difference between Business vs Personal Profile Page – which is crucial to anyone kickstarting their company. This was followed by refreshments and a terrific tour of the super cool Facebook Asia Pacific office. We cannot thank the #SheMeansBusiness team enough for the organising the workshop and share all those great insights with our students.

Breast Cancer Awareness Talk

Aidha and the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) arranged a free Breast Cancer Awareness talk at the Sunday campus. Over 60 Aidha students and other FDWs attended the session which covered the multiple aspects of most cancer that plagues women worldwide. A representative from BCF Awareness, Ms. Cheng Ee Shan, spoke to the crowd about causes, symptoms, effects and cure of Breast Cancer and also listed out how BCF supports the patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer.
We also had Dr. Andrew Clayton Lee, Consultant Breast Surgeon at Changi General Hospital, cover the risk factors and prevention of breast cancer. Finally, Ms Esther Sim, an active BCF volunteer and member of BCF Paddlers-in-the-Pink, shared her story of overcoming three incidents of breast cancer. It was a beautiful Sunday with some great information sessions and stories being shared. We thank @BreastCancerFoundation of Singapore for arranging this, and also thank HOME: Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics for being a part of the event.

#Be100percent

Benefit Cosmetics, in preparation for the launch of their global philanthropic program “Bold is Beautiful”, has lined up numerous intitiatives. This year’s theme is #Be100percent, aiming to empower women to feel 100% themselves by increasing access to resources and opportunities to affect positive change in their local communities. Aidha was invited to two events – the Benefit brunch on the 22nd of March and the press launch on the 23rd of March. Aidha was represented by the Aidha team and alumni. Our alumni, Radliyah, shared a touching story of her life, her struggles and how she overcame them.

ABA Workshop

On the 26th of August, Aidha held an Aidha Business Accelerator (ABA) workshop at the Sunday Campus to help the students to fine tune and refine their business plans.

The first half had mentor Mr. Paolo Adragna presenting to the students on “Ways to Finance Small Businesses”, giving specific pointers that would help students with their monetary planning.
The students then broke out into smaller groups for one-on-one mentoring session with other Aidha mentors to discuss other aspects of business financing like cash flow and overall business planning. We are extremely grateful to all the mentors who took the time out to help our ABA students.

ABA Google Workshop

Google has been a great partner of Aidha’s for a long time, and on 19th of August, they set up a workshop for students in Aidha Business Accelerator (ABA) program to design logos for their businesses.

Each participant had two consultations to go in-depth into their business ideas and design their logos. The Googlers were really helpful in giving our alumni useful insights and guidelines on how to pick the right logo and creatives for their business. We are immensely grateful to Google for having Aidha over and giving our ABA students all the great pointers and take-aways.

All photos from the workshop can be found here.
