Annie Galves, an Aidha alumna, has always been a guiding light for those around her. Her story is one of resilience, determination, and the courage to embrace new opportunities.
Growing up in a remote Philippine village, she walked over an hour to school daily while helping her parents’ small business and caring for her siblings. When her parents hesitated to send her to secondary school due to financial constraints, she convinced them to sell piglets to fund her education. With the support of relatives, she moved to the city, leaving her family behind to pursue her dreams.
Though she longed for university, financial limitations led her to begin working at 17 to support her family. After 20 years in Manila’s factories, she seized the opportunity to work in Singapore as a domestic helper. Within a week, she embarked on a completely new life.
Adjusting to a new culture and work was challenging, but she persevered, staying dedicated to her goals. Her employers, both past and present, have been incredibly supportive, fostering a sense of mutual respect and open communication that has made her feel valued and secure.
Despite the new life, Annie’s desire to keep learning never wavered. When she discovered Aidha and its courses, she was thrilled at the chance to gain computer skills – something she had always wanted but never had access to. With her employer’s encouragement, she enrolled at Aidha, gaining not just tech skills but also confidence.
Annie recounts how nervous she would get when asked to stand and say her name, “But look at me now, I’m talking!” Annie fondly recalls her time at Aidha, highlighting the supportive and inspiring mentors who played a huge role in her journey.

Inspired by her experience, she volunteered at Aidha’s graduation ceremony and later stepped into the role of Big Sister. She now helps new students adjust, supports mentors and staff, and fosters a strong sense of community within every class.

Beyond the classroom, Annie provides emotional support, guiding students through challenges, like when she helped a student struggling with family issues who nearly dropped out. By the end of the programme, the student completed her course and personally thanked Annie at the certificate ceremony, a moment she recalls with pride.
When asked about her favourite part of being a Big Sister, Annie’s face lights up. “Seeing them receive their certificates… it’s a fulfilling moment.”
From humble beginnings to becoming a guiding force for others, Annie proves that with determination, learning and growth never stop.
